Target Start Date: Monday, February 3rd, 2020


Under the supervision of the Design/Build Leader, the position is accountable for the safe and efficient machining and assembly of high quality tooling, fixtures, fabricating equipment, and CNC and EDM tooling for all SPG manufacturing facilities and internal customers at the Development Center.


  • Design, program, and create tooling using the EDM equipment

  • Lead groups in the creation of EDM tooling, and train others as needed

  • Design, program, and create tooling using the CNC equipment

  • Lead groups in the creation of CNC tooling, and train others as needed

  • Assist design team in verifying the accuracy of tooling dimensions and drawings

  • Recommend changes and modifications to improve overall quality or reduce cost

  • Determine process to be used in the machining of tooling

  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate equipment in a safe manner

  • Fabricate prototype tooling for production trials

  • Produce tooling efficiently according to design specifications and functional requirements

  • Assemble completed tooling and ensure functionality matches design

  • Inspect and test tooling to ensure customer satisfaction

  • Train apprentices and assist Development Center employees in machining practices

  • Troubleshoot tooling problems with other departments and plants

  • Collaborate with cross functional groups to design and build machinery to meet customer specifications

  • Create jigs, fixtures, and other items used to produce tooling

  • Perform general housekeeping duties in the shop area


    The position works within parameters as defined by generally accepted machining practices, EDM operating procedures, CNC operating procedures, manufacturing capabilities, cost, and time efficiency. The position uses knowledge, precedent, and experience to complete projects and adhere to customer specifications. The position performs primarily as a self-directed employee and refers deviations in protocol to the Design/Build Leader for approval.


    This position should have the following knowledge and experience:

  • A thorough understanding of machining, and tool and die making

  • An understanding of the strengths and capabilities of various metals

  • Be familiar with standard equipment; lathe, mill, grinder, etc.

  • A strong knowledge of programming and operating the EDM machines

  • A strong knowledge of programming and operating the CNC machines

  • The ability to analyze, interpret and comprehend technical drawings and have practical math skills

  • A familiarity with extrusion processes is helpful

    This knowledge would typically be obtained through formal education such as journeyman s licensing or through eight years in the work field.
